FreeTO Kick Off Post
We just dropped Episode 2 of what we’re (probably) calling The FreeTO Project — our podcast mini-series exploring one of the most asked (and rarely answered) questions in construction tech today:
What’s the career path for a ConTech?
Like, what are you actually building toward when you’re managing tools, workflows, and digital chaos in the field or fab shop? If that next step is a CTO role, how do you start making real moves in that direction? And maybe more importantly: how do you convince your company this role even needs to exist (and that you’re the one to fill it)?
These questions aren’t new, but they’re finally getting louder. We’ve heard them at events, on trade show floors, at after-hours hangs, even whispered in back-alley nerd sessions after too much bourbon. That’s why your much-beloved (or at least grudgingly tolerated) squad of Dorks decided to do what we do best: turn it into a podcast with just enough structure to eventually go off the rails.
Each of us has worked toward or served in these kinds of roles, and we’ve loved watching friends rise to positions of phenomenal cosmic power, many becoming the benevolent dictators of their company’s tech stacks. The first two episodes scratch the surface of the why, the how, and the “OK but seriously, is this even possible?”
And yes — if you’ve already claimed the CTO badge (with or without the official title), we’d love to hear your story. Hit us up to share your path, vent your battle scars, or maybe even join us for an episode. Help us map the path for those still grinding XP at the ConTech level.
Because if we’re being honest, no one’s handing out CTO jobs like candy. You’ve got to:
Speak fluent exec and field
Build trust without a title
Show impact before you get the job offer
That’s what FreeTO is all about — helping our fellow tech nerds design their own blueprint for the corner office.
And yeah, we made a meme about it. Because this is a level-up moment. Game on.
Episodes 1 and 2 are live. Listen wherever you like your podcasts weird and lightly caffeinated. Then tell us what you think — we’re always up for a good tangent… and tangents from that tangent.
